This was once part of a complete system that spanned across the US. After the replacement of transportation in the Milwaukee area the Railroad became abandoned. Many artists and hipsters defended the movement that the State made to remove the rails but both sides came to agreement that the railways are left behind, the government ceded due to the cost it would take them to uproot the whole system. With the coming apocalypse that quickly became a moot point.
Now within the years after, the Rails have become an easy point to navigate with. Having cut within and through a majority of the major towns and cities it allows for travelers with poor sense of direction to find their way. Unfortunately with the high overgrowth and hidden footpaths it makes travelers very susceptable to ambushes from scavengers and horsemen.
No one has yet to fix any train or repair enough to make it feasible to use for anything other then foot.
